Vernic

Vernic (Pronounced Vernitch) is a clip from the pilot episode from an animated series called 'Nosebleed'. This scene was a test to see if the look and feel of the environment and the 'stop-motion' style animation would work for the rest of the pilot episode. The stop motion effect has been enhanced by rendering the animation on 2's (only rendering every other frame).

The idea was to create a theatre set style environment to give the characters a puppet-like quality. The lighting was setup to create bright highlights and rich black shadows, we took many cues from the Film-noir film genre. The whole animation has been given an aged look by de-saturating the colours and adding, grain, flicker and projector jitter.

To further enhance the harsh lighting, the whole animation was rendered in High Dynamic Range to stop the very bright and very dark colours reaching white or black. It also allowed me to create a camera halo effect from very bright areas of the scene - such as Vernic' head.
